UPDATE: Coroner Releases Name of Woman Killed on I-580

Traffic was backed up from Santa Rita in Pleasanton to the Altamont in Livermore and to Castro Valley in the west on Friday morning.

UPDATED 9:36a.m. Sunday: Officials have released the name of the woman hit by two cars and killed on Interstate 580 Friday morning.

Her name is Francesca Martinez, 51, and according to a Contra Costa Times story, the Alameda County Coroner's Office did not have information about her hometown.

She was killed on eastbound I-580 in Pleasanton at Santa Rita Road around 6:20 a.m. Friday after reportedly waving her arms and trying to stop traffic. All eastbound lanes of the highway were briefly blocked following the crash. The three right lanes reopened around 7 a.m., and the remaining lanes reopened by about 9 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

According to a report by KTVU, she was running from the right hand shoulder to the center divide waving her arms, when she was struck by at least two vehicles and killed.

The roadway was partially blocked, CHP Marc Johnston said, while the CHP investigated. Officials are still trying to figure out why she ran out onto the freeway.
