Many commenters on the PPD's post questioned why the suspects were not taken into custody at a juvenile detention center. California law differentiates between felony-level "grand theft auto," in which the car is permanently taken from their owner, and misdemeanor "joyriding," when the car is taken without the owner's permission, but returned. For minors, the charge depends on the specific circumstances and the owner's previous record.

Patch is awaiting further details from the Pleasanton Police Department.
