Pleasanton Mayor Karla Brown Running For Re-Election
Brown has served as mayor since 2020, and as a council member since 2012. She is running against Council Member Jack Balch.

PLEASANTON, CA — Pleasanton Mayor Karla Brown announced Sunday that she is running for re-election in the fall. Brown served eight years on the Pleasanton City Council, including two years as vice mayor, and was elected mayor in 2020. She ran unopposed for re-election in 2022, but this year faces a challenge from Councilmember Jack Balch.
Brown listed increased safety, fully staffed emergency personnel, and securing additional resources for clean drinking water as her top priorities if re-elected.
“My work is not done,” she said in a campaign announcement, which cited high resident satisfaction in surveys on a number of metrics, like safety, fiscal management, and overall quality of life. “We have outstanding support from our police officers, mental health clinicians, and our firefighters during Emergency-911 calls for service. I will continue to work with the City Manager to utilize the latest technology available to prevent property crimes and improve resident safety, while filling open positions with highly trained personnel.”

Brown is a member of two regional water committees who advocates repair and replacement of existing resources. She is in favor of drilling new water wells in PFA-free zones to diversify supplies and reduce costs. She was one of three councilmembers to vote in favor of a water rate increase of 42% over two years after city staff warned that the city’s Water Enterprise Fund would be insolvent by 2025.
Brown also cited a sustainable budget and “smart-growth policies.” She recognized the need to meet state housing mandates, but has also advocated for open spaces, notably through supporting Measure PP and Measure D, which helped preserve the city’s scenic ridgelines. She also refused donations from builders and developers, and supports a “balanced” approach to growth that increases local tax revenue but maintains quality of life. She also advocated for a “sustainable city budget that will maintain as many services as possible,” a tall order in a time of mounting costs.
