PLEASANTON, CA — Police in Pleasanton are urging the public to avoid dangerous driving decisions while ringing in the New Year.

In a post on social media, the Pleasanton Police Department asked residents to use a ride-share like Uber or designate a sober driver after having alcohol at New Year's Eve or New Year's Day celebrations.

"If someone is impaired, get them a safe ride home or let them stay over," police suggested, adding "Let's make 2025 the year of safer roads!"

During the agency's extra enforcement period during Christmas, five people died in California in just 30 hours within the CHP's jurisdiction, the agency said.

Last year over the New Year's enforcement effort, CHP officers made a staggering 892 DUI arrests statewide.

“Our officers are committed to working through the holidays to ensure everyone can reach their destinations safely,” said CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee. “Safe roads are possible when every driver makes responsible decisions behind the wheel.”

What's more, officers arrested over 300 people for driving under the influence. That's an average of one DUI arrest every six minutes, officers said.
