Scottish Highland Gathering & Games Coming To Alameda Fairgrounds
The games will feature everything from a kilted mile race, sheepdog trials, whisky tastings, and many more Celtic delights.
PLEASANTON, CA — Grab your kilts and bagpipes: the Highland Games are coming to town.
The Alameda County Fairgrounds will host the 158th Scottish Highland Gathering and Games, a two-day celebration of all things Scottish. The games will begin Friday night, with a Celtic concert at the San Ramon Marriott. On Saturday and Sunday, lairds and ladies can enjoy a number of competitions and exhibitions, including:
- Heavy Athletics competitions like traditional Scottish hammer throwing, putting the stone, weight for height & distance, and sheaf & caber tossing events.
- Highland Dancing competitions
- Piping & Drumming competitions
- Soccer - mens on Saturday, women’s on Sunday
- Archery
- Birds of Prey - exhibition featuring eagles, hawks, owls, and falcons
- Celtic Animals - enjoy cows, Clydesdale horses and more at the Amador Pavilion
- Celtic Heritage - Scottish and Irish dancing, fiddling, and other traditional Celtic performances
- Clans & Scottish Societies - learn about Scotland’s clan system and meet members of Northern California’s Scottish Societies
- Classic Cars - Classic British cars like Aston Martins, MGs, Morgans, and more
- Entertainment - Includes Celtic rock, Scottish folk singers, and more
- Grandstand Shows - Opening and closing ceremonies
- Kilted Mile Race - the only kilting running event in California.
- Living History - Experience an immersive journey into medieval Scotland, complete with costumes
- Sheepdog Trials - See border collies handling sheep
- Vendors - A number of Scottish and Celtic-themed food, jewelry, clothes and more
- Whisky Tasting - Enjoy whiskies from Scotland and all over the world
A one-day ticket costs $44.80 for adults, $28 for youth and seniors, and $5.60 for children ages 6-11. Military and children five and under get in for free.
