POWAY, CA — The San Diego County Sheriff's Office will host family-friendly events next week across the county to bring communities together to take a stand against crime.

In Poway, the sheriff's office will host an event from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 5 at the Poway Sheriff's Station.

National Night Out events, held by law enforcement agencies across the country, aim to promote strong police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make neighborhoods safer, according to the annual community-building campaign.

Community members will have a chance to meet deputies and other law enforcement personnel, hear crime prevention tips, and receive public safety resources. Many events will feature giveaways and other activities, according to the sheriff's office.

The first National Night Out was held in the summer of 1984. More than 2.5 million community members across 23 states participated in the event.

Today, more than 38 million people across 17,000 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories and military bases celebrate National Night Out, with some law enforcement agencies hosting block parties, cookouts, festivals and parades as part of their events.
