Poway Unified High Schools Among 2022's Best: U.S. News

The annual ranking released by U.S. News and World Report evaluates schools based on graduation rates, academic performance and more.

POWAY, CA β€” High schools in Poway Unified School District are top schools in California, according to a new national ranking by U.S. News and World Report. This year's list of best high schools evaluated more than 17,800 schools nationwide, including 1,603 in the Golden State.

Del Norte High School was ranked No. 41 in state and No. 314 nationally. Westview High School was ranked No. 54 in state and No. 421 nationally. Mt. Carmel High School was ranked No. 192 in state and No. 1,328 nationally.

The 2022 ranking of best high schools is intended to show how well the nation's public schools serve all students, regardless of achievement level, by teaching them basic skills and preparing them for college-level work, according to a news release from U.S. News.

Families can also use the rankings to see how schools compare at the national, state and local levels on factors such as graduation rates and college readiness.

These are the San Diego area schools that were ranked among the top 200 schools in the state:

  2. Canyon Crest Academy, San Diego (No. 17 in state, No. 156 nationally)
  3. Del Norte High School, San Diego (No. 41 in state, No. 314 nationally)
  4. Westview High School, San Diego (No. 54 in state, No. 421 nationally)
  5. Sage Creek High School, Carlsbad (No. 76 in state, No. 567 nationally)
  6. Mt. Everest Academy, San Diego (No. 98 in state, No. 756 nationally)
  7. Del Lago Academy - Campus of Applied Science, Escondido (No. 100 in state, No. 770 nationally)
  8. Scripps Ranch High School, San Diego (No. 101 in state, No. 806 nationally)
  9. San Diego International Studies, San Diego (No. 102 in state, No. 808 nationally)

  17. San Dieguito High Academy, Encinitas (No. 162 in state, No. 1,122 nationally)
  18. Mira Mesa High School, San Diego (No. 169 in state, No. 1,142 nationally)
  19. Coronado High School, Coronado (No. 174 in state, No. 1,166 nationally)
  20. Henry High School, San Diego (No. 182 in state, No. 1,224 nationally)
  21. Mt. Carmel High School, San Diego (No. 192 in state, No. 1,328 nationally)

Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Alexandria, Virginia, was ranked No. 1 in the nation, as well as among magnet schools.

No California schools made the top 10 national ranking. However, 10 California schools were ranked among the top 100 nationally, according to U.S. News. When you filter by California only, the following 25 schools were ranked the best in the Golden State:

  3. Oxford Academy, Cypress (No. 16 nationally)

  6. Lowell High School, San Francisco (No. 82 nationally)
  7. University High School, Fresno (No. 92 nationally)
  8. Mission San Jose High School, Fremont (No. 94 nationally)
  9. Dr. T.J. Owens Gilroy Early College Academy, Gilroy (No. 95 nationally)
  10. Riverside Stem Academy, Riverside (No. 100 nationally)
  11. Lynbrook High School, San Jose (No. 101 nationally)
  12. Eunice Sato Academy of Math & Science, Long Beach (No. 105 nationally)
  13. Hawthorne Math and Science Academy, Hawthorne (No. 121 nationally)
