Wildfire Protection: Free Defensible Space Clearing Offered to Seniors and Disabled

Maintaining 100 feet of defensible space around homes is San Diego County helps to protect your home from fire and provides firefighters a safe area when defending homes, and it's required by law. A program that offers free defensible space clearing to low income seniors and the disabled in the county is being publicized during the "drought state of emergency" across California.

Qualifying participants in San Diego County can have 100 feet of defensible space cleared from around their homes. This includes thinning and clearing of brush, tree trimming and thinning, raking of dead leaves and pine needles, and chipping of removed vegetation. There is no cost, but participants must meet certain age and income criteria. Assistance will be given on a first come first served basis.

Wildfire is an ever-present threat to San Diego County residents and many of our communities are built near or on land prone to wildland fire. We can’t stop fires from happening altogether, but we can reduce the damage to our homes and communities by creating 100 feet of defensible space and reducing vegetation around our homes.

The program is offered by the FireSafe Council of San Diego County, in partnership with the Resource Conservation District of San Diego County.
