A Romantic Dinner, Pizza and the Playoffs

1. Valentine's Day is on Monday, and somebody's going to be on the hook for dinner. Looking for a little help? Check out our from earlier this week to get some romantic ideas on where to take the special person in your life.

2. Today is a big day for boys' and girls' basketball teams as the Southern Section playoff pairings are released. Paying special attention will be Tesoro. The boys' team ended its season with a 65-45 loss to El Toro in the South Coast League. By finishing outside the top three positions, in fourth, the Titans failed to earn a guaranteed playoff berth. They will instead be looking to snare an at-large berth into the 32-team Division I-A playoff field. With o earlier this season—the only team to beat the Diablos—Tesoro will almost certainly get in.

3. Orange Coast Magazine delivered pizza rankings in its February issue, and was Pizza e Vino in Rancho Santa Margarita. Actually, RSM bookended the listings, with Selma's Chicago Pizzeria rounding out the top 20.

4. On this date in history, Feb. 13, 1633, Galileo Galilei arrived in Rome where he had to answer charges of heresy before a Roman Inquisition for declaring the earth revolved around the sun, which conflicted with the Vatican's notion that the earth was the center of the universe; after being found guilty, he eventually renounced his findings in exchange for a lighter prison sentence. In 1915, the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) was formed.

5. Hey hey, Peter Tork (69) celebrates a birthday today along with American hero Chuck Yeager (88) and a host of others: Mena Suvari (32), Robbie Williams (37), Peter Gabriel (61), Stockard Channing (67) and Jerry Springer (67), George Segal (77) and Kim Novak (78). Others born on this date were the late Tennessee Ernie Ford (1919), "American Gothic" painter Grant Wood (1891) and former first lady Bess Truman (1885).
