Analysis: Locals Have Long Commutes

More than half of Redondo Beach residents have commutes that last longer than 15 minutes, according to an On Numbers analysis.

Nearly 40 percent of commuters from Redondo Beach spend more than 30 minutes driving to their workplace, according to an analysis done by the Business Journals On Numbers column.

On Numbers assigned the city a commuting index of -7.115; Redondo Beach ranked 339th among 483 medium-sized cities in the United States.

According to the analysis, about 23 percent of Redondo workers have a commute time of 14 minutes or less; about 38 percent have a commute time of 15-29 minutes; about 18 percent have a commute time of 30-44 minutes; and slightly more than 21 percent have a commute time of 45 minutes or more.

The U.S. Census Bureau's 5-year version of the 2009 American Community Survey provided commuting data for On Numbers.

"Cities, incorporated towns and census designated places (CDPs) were awarded points for all commuters who drive less than 30 minutes to work," according to Business Journals article. "But they lost points for all workers above that threshold."

The higher the commuting index, the shorter the average commute.

Grand Forks, N.D., has the easiest commute of medium-sized cities in the United States—its commuting index is 19.125. With a commuting index of -25.533, Dale City, Va., had the worst commute of all the cities analyzed.
