Anita/190th, PCH Is Worst Intersection

The intersection on the border of South Redondo Beach and Hermosa Beach draws the ire of Redondo Beach Patch readers.

It's official: Redondo Beach Patch readers hate the intersection of Pacific Coast Highway and Anita/190th Street in South Redondo on the Hermosa Beach border. With 25 percent of the vote, it narrowly beat out the intersection of 190th Street and Flagler Lane at the top of a hill.

Commenters complained of mistimed lights and traffic jams, but the No. 1 complaint  against the intersection was about the left-turn lanes from Anita/190th Street onto southbound Pacific Coast Highway and Catalina Avenue. A sign above the left-turn lanes indicate that drivers in the innermost lane should turn onto Pacific Coast Highway, while motorists in the outer left-turn lane are directed beneath the "Welcome to Redondo Beach" sign above Catalina Avenue.

Nevertheless, people described how instead of turning onto Catalina Avenue, people in the outer left-turn lane will turn onto Pacific Coast Highway, nearly crashing into people turning from the innermost lane on Anita/190th Street into the outermost lane on Pacific Coast Highway.

"I honk my horn all the time to avoid an accident," wrote Kent McCaman. "These people don't even seem to be aware of their infraction."

"This intersection—this hazard—might be made safer by installing a dense line of reflective road markers to clearly outline the only option for vehicles to traverse from the 190th westbound No. 2 lane to the Catalina Avenue merge lane," McCaman wrote. "The reflective markers on the pavement should outline each side of their lane and be spaced close together."
