Beaches Earn Poor Water Quality Grades

Redondo Beach's county beaches barely earned passing grades during the most recent 30-day calculation of water quality averages, according to grades published Wednesday on the website for the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.

The beaches in front of the Herondo Street storm drain, 50 yards south of the Redondo Beach Pier, and on the north side of the Topaz jetty all earned C grades.

The beach 50 yards north of the Herondo Street storm drain received a grade of D, and Torrance Beach in front of the Avenue I storm drain received a B.

The beaches in front of the Herondo Street storm drain and 50 yards south of the Redondo Beach Pier did not meet state standards for ocean water bacteria. The Department of Public Health advises beachgoers to avoid water contact between 100 yards north of the Herondo Street storm drain and 100 yards south of the storm drain.

People should also avoid water contact from the pier to 100 yards south of the pier.
