Blotter: Don't Bite the Jailer

Officers from the Redondo Beach Police Department dealt with multiple incidents, during the week of Nov. 7, according to the Recent Law Enforcement Events news release. The following is only a sample of police activities during the week.

Bicycle burglary

A woman is in lockup after trying to burgle a home and biting a jailer last Friday, police said.

The woman, who was not identified in the Recent Law Enforcement Events news release, was spotted at about 12:45 a.m. pushing a bicycle and carrying various items from a garage in the 600 block of South Prospect Avenue, police said. The owner of the items confronted the woman, who dropped everything and fled.

Police arrested her on theft and vandalism charges; however, during the booking processes she became combative, police said. While officers and jail staff tried to control her, she "severely bit the jailer's hand."

The jailer was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, and the woman was charged with assault, police said.

Suspicious fire

The Redondo Beach Fire Department is currently investigating a small fire that was "suspicious in nature," according to the Redondo Beach Police Department.

Police and firefighters were called to the area near Pacific Coast Highway and Beryl Street early in the morning Jan. 3 after receiving calls for citizens nearby, police said.

Authorities said that the small fire, located in a dumpster, damaged the exterior of the building at 413 N. Pacific Coast Hwy., but it was extinguished quickly.

Teen arrested on suspicion of DUI

An 18-year-old driver crashed into the concrete posts at the entrance of Lilienthal Park in North Redondo Beach shortly before 3 a.m. on Jan. 4, police said.

According to the statement from the police department, the driver was speeding southbound on Lilienthal Lane and failed to make the right turn at Fisk Lane.

Though the driver was not injured, he or she was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of an intoxicant, police said.

Robbed at knifepoint

Three people tried to rob one of the businesses at 403 Torrance Blvd. at knifepoint on Sunday night, police reported.

According to officers, one person brandished a knife while the other two grabbed items from store shelves. When an employee tried to stop them, the one with the knife slashed his clothing. Still, the trio dropped the merchandise and fled.

Responding officers couldn't find the robbers, and the incident is under investigation.
