City Names Community Services Director

Joe Hoefgen is promoted from acting director to director of recreation and community services.

Less than four months after he was named the acting director of in Redondo Beach, Joe Hoefgen has been hired for the permanent position.

City Manager Bill Workman announced the hiring at Tuesday's City Council meeting.

"Joe came out No. 1 in our candidate review," Workman said. He later added, "[Hoefgen] has a great scope of experience and was surprised about how much he liked Redondo and how much we liked him and his performance."

Hoefgen was at the end of September. He replaced Maggie Healey, who recently retired from city service.

"We're very proud that [Hoefgen] said yes," said Workman, who also noted that the new director was one of multiple people who interviewed for the job. "Today's formally his first day as director of community services."

Hoefgen, who lost his job as the Palos Verdes Estates city manager in June for reasons that have never been made public, has also worked for the cities of Encinitas and Del Mar.

He oversees the and , among other facilities.
