City Offers Free 'King Harbor' Compost

Redondo Beach and Athens Service will offer free compost made from the sardines that died in King Harbor.

Athens Services will give away its "King Harbor Blend" organic compostβ€”made from the 175 tons of sardines that died in King Harbor in Marchβ€”at a special event Saturday morning, according to a flier posted on the Redondo Beach city website.

Residents who wish to collect up to 30 gallons of compost can visit Wilderness Park, located at 1102 Camino Real. They should bring their own containers; however, shovels will be provided.

Compost will be available from 8 a.m. until noon or until supplies last.

In March, Athens Services brought the to its Victorville facility, American Organics, which is one of only two certified organic composting places in the state.

At the time, USC Professor Dave Caron that while scientists detected the neurotoxin in the bellies of the sardines, he believed that it would naturally degrade.
