City, Schools to Close for MLK Jr. Day

Redondo Beach city offices and public schools will be closed Monday in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Redondo Beach city government offices will be closed in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday.

In addition to both the and libraries, schools in the will also be closed for the holiday.

Banks, financial markets and post offices will be closed, and mail will not be delivered Monday.

Where and when: White Point Nature Preserve, 1600 W. Paseo Del Mar, San Pedro; 9 a.m. to noon

Why go: Celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service at the preserve by planting natives and repairing trails. Call 310-561-0917 for more information.

CITY YEAR LOS ANGELES MLK JR. DAY OF SERVICE

Where and when: Los Angeles Academy Middle School, 644 E. 56th St., Los Angeles; 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

MLK JR. DAY OF SERVICE 2012

Where and when: Los Feliz Elementary School, 1740 N. New Hampshire Ave., Los Angeles; All day.

Why go: Volunteers will create murals in the playground space, paint school buildings and grounds, plant flowers and shrubs, and organize classroom areas. Toiletries for veterans will also be collected at the event. For more information, call L.A. Works at 323-224-6510.
