City to Lower Speed Limit on Grant Ave.

The speed limit on Grant Avenue from Inglewood to Kingsdale avenues will be lowered from 35 mph to 30 mph, the city council decided last Tuesday after a public hearing.

City staff recommended lowering the speed limit after conducting traffic surveys required by the California Vehicle Code. Without these surveys, Redondo Beach police officers would be unable to use radar or other electronics to enforce speed limits.

According to the traffic survey, about half the motorists traveled at 25 mph or less on that stretch of Grant Avenue. Eighty-five percent of motorists traveled at 28 mph or less on that stretch. Per the CVC, speed limits should be set at the nearest 5 mph increment to the 85th percentile of free-flowing traffic.

Traffic surveys were also conducted along Catalina Avenue between Palos Verdes Boulevard and North Pacific Coast Highway; Garnet Street between South Catalina Avenue to South Prospect Avenue; Grant Avenue from Aviation Boulevard to Inglewood Avenue; Herondo Street between North Harbor Drive and North Pacific Coast Highway; and Torrance Boulevard between the Redondo Beach Pier and the city's eastern limit.

City staff recommended that all other speed limits on surveyed roads remain the same.

The council will approve the ordinance changing the speed limit at a future meeting.
