Meeting to Address Knob Hill's Future

Residents are invited to a community meeting to discuss the future of the school district's property at 320 Knob Hill Ave.

Fountain Square Development West, the winning bidder for the lease of the property at 320 Knob Hill Ave., will speak at a community meeting Monday evening at the .

In its presentation to the Board of Education earlier this year, Fountain Square indicated that it wished to build a senior living facility on the Knob Hill properly, which was the site of the former Patterson Elementary School. If the deal goes through, Fountain Square will pay at least $614,250 annually to rent the property.

"I have asked the potential developer … to host a community meeting as a means of reaching out to you," said Redondo Beach City Councilman Steve Aspel in an email to his constituents. The Knob Hill site is located within Aspel's District 1.

The site has been the center of a controversy since the city of Redondo Beach declined to renew its lease several years ago. Many residents in the neighborhood want the property to remain zoned for a school, just in case another campus in South Redondo Beach is needed; however, the school districthas suffered severe cuts to the money it receives from the state and wants the extra income.

Monday evening's meeting, which is open to the public, is "simply an outreach by the potential developer," Aspel said. No decisions will be made, and people are welcome to bring their opinions and ideas.
