Council Votes to Hike Sewer Fees

The Redondo Beach City Council votes to increase residential sewer fees from $7.25 to more than $15 over the next several years.

Despite protests from some residents, the Redondo Beach City Council voted Tuesday to increase residential sewer fees by $3 each year until 2014, according to the Daily Breeze.

The fees would help pay for upgrades to the city's nearly 80-year-old sewer system with more than a dozen pump stations and 112 miles of sewer lines. Over the next 15 years, the system will need about $33 million worth of repairs—$19 million to upgrade pump stations and $11 million to improve pipe conditions.

The city also budgets $800,000 per year for maintenance.
