Donations Sought for Fire Station Project

Sharefest Inc. is remodeling the kitchen of Redondo Beach Fire Station No. 1.

More than $25,000 has been raised for the remodel of the 's Fire Station No. 1; however, there's still a long way to go before the project hits its fundraising goal of $85,000, according to Sharefest Inc., the organization behind the remodel.

So far, there have been six monetary donors to the project, according to the project's page on Razoo.com.

In January, the Fire Department's Fire Station No. 1 was named a finalist in the Family Handyman's Rescue Remodel contest, which pitted five fire stations against each other in a contest to see who could get the most votes. The winning fire station received a $25,000 kitchen remodel from IKEA.

Despite a viral video of the firefighters dancing to "We Cook Our Food in a Hopeless Place," sung to Rihanna's "We Found Love," RBFD finished third in the voting.

That's when Sharefest stepped up, volunteering to not only remodel the fire station's kitchen but to also redo the bathroom, dorms and conference room. The project—which Sharefest Executive Director Chad Mayer said will cost about $85,000 rather than the usual $250,000—will culminate this Saturday on the organization's annual work day.

The work day will also feature a blood drive, a shoe drive, concert, food and an open house. Project manager Shannell McMillan said they're also hoping to hold a bone marrow donor drive.

Those interested in volunteering their services for the remodel should email rbfd@sharefestinc.org with information about their skills, years of experience and availability.
