DUI Checkpoint Set for 7 p.m. Friday

Police have not disclosed the location of the checkpoint, which lasts through 2 a.m. Saturday.

Police have scheduled a DUI and driver's license checkpoint for 7 p.m. Friday in an undisclosed location within the Redondo Beach city limits, according to a news release from the .

The checkpoint will last through 2 a.m. Saturday.

At the checkpoint, officers will check drivers for signs of alcohol or drug impairment, as well as proper licensing.

"Drivers caught driving impaired can expect jail, license suspension and insurance increases, as well as fines, fees, DUI classes (and) other expenses that can exceed $10,000," according to the release.

According to Investigator Jeff Mendence, 78 motorists driving under the influence in Redondo Beach have injured 117 people over the last three years.

The Redondo Beach Police Department publicizes checkpoints because research indicates that the number of crashes involving alcohol decreases by about 20 percent "when well-publicized checkpoints are conducted often enough," according to the release.
