Fire Station Needs 'Rescue Remodel'

The Redondo Beach Fire Department needs your help to win a $25,000 kitchen makeover from IKEA for Fire Station No. 1.

Redondo Beach Fire Station No. 1 is still in a distant third place in the Family Handyman's Rescue Remodel contest for a $25,000 kitchen remodel from IKEA.

Palos Fire Protection District Station No. 1 is in the lead, with more than 83,000 votes, with Yonkers Engine Co. 306 in second place, with more than 66,000 votes.

Redondo is closing the gap with its more than 44,000 votes; however, there are fewer than two weeks left in the contest.

Nevertheless, the local fire department is giving the contest its all. The music video of "We Cook Our Food in a Hopeless Place"—sung to Rihanna's "We Found Love"—has been viewed more than 35,900 times on YouTube since it premiered Feb. 2nd.

"I watched and listened to this video for 2 1/2 hours while shopping at IKEA," wrote commenter renedaviewer on the video's YouTube page. "It was on every TV there and on the PA system."

People on the contest page are also pulling for Redondo.

"You guys are awesome! Thanks for saving me last (Wednesday) at PCH and Vincent," wrote Kelly Grant. "You deserve a new kitchen … nice to see you all rallied for the fun in the video."

"You guys really do cook in a hopeless place!" wrote Loretta Reith. "So I voted yes for you because that video made me so very sad. Not the performance but the sad, sad kitchen."

Possibly due to the success of Redondo's video, frontrunner Palos Fire Protection District in Illinois posted a slideshow of photos of its kitchen set to mournful music on YouTube, called "Palos Fire Sad Kitchen." That video, which was uploaded Wednesday, has been viewed fewer than 400 times.
