Help Fire Station Win Kitchen Remodel

is one of five finalists nationwide in the Family Handyman's RescueRemodel contest. The winning fire station receives a $25,000 kitchen renovation from Ikea.
Thousands of firehouses across the country were nominated, but only Redondo Beach, Palos Fire Protection District Station No. 1, FDNY Squad 61, Yonkers Engine Co. 306 and the Sheridan Fire District made the final cut.
In a note posted on the RescueRemodel website, Steve Hyink, the fire division chief of operations, wrote that the Fire Department has been trying to save money to renovate the 60-year-old station's kitchen for years; however, that money has gone to fix a leaky fire station roof, as well as and other medical equipment.

"There really is no option or hesitation when faced with a decision to purchase something for the community … the kitchen can wait," he wrote.
He also mentioned the city's economic downturn, noting that firefighters and other city employees have taken a 6 percent pay cut to save their fellow employees' jobs.

"We don't like to ask for help, but it would really be appreciated if we could just get some cabinets and a new counter," Hyink wrote.
