July 4th 'Busy' But 'Routine' for RBPD

The Redondo Beach Police Department is kept busy on Independence Day.

Though more than 100,000 people descended upon Redondo Beach for the Fourth of July holiday, there were no significant incidents or arrests in the city, according to the .

"We had our drunks and we had our fights … (the) same things we have every year," Sgt. Scott Weibel told Patch.

According to Weibel, all sworn officers in the department were on duty—about 90 in total, including Chief Joe Leonardi—patrolling and doing the "monumental job" of traffic control.

Leonardi even hopped on a bicycle to chase a suspect at one point during the day, according to Daily Breeze reporter Larry Altman.

Additionally, there were several lost children and several "found kids with lost parents," but "as far as we know, everyone was reunited," he said.

Officers were also dispatched on complaints regarding illegal fireworks; however, "by the time we got there, their little private shows were done and over with," Weibel said.

All in all, "(the day) was extremely busy, but it was fairly routine," Weibel said.
