New Meters Installed at Pier Plaza Lot
The Pier Plaza Parking structure gets new multispace meters.

The gates into the Pier Plaza Parking Structure, which services the Redondo Beach Pier and the International Boardwalk, were torn down last week with the introduction of a new pay-by-space parking system for the lot.
The new system uses multispace parking meters—where customers note the number of their parking spot and enter it at the meter before they pay—instead of the old pay-to-exit system.
Parking fees for the new system are $1.50 per hour from Sept. 16 through May 14. From May 15 through Sept. 15, parking will cost $2 for the second and subsequent hours. On weekdays between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m., the first hour will cost 50 cents.

People can pay for parking with exact change or a credit card.
The previous pay-to-exit system, which is still installed in the pier parking structure, was the subject of numerous complaints over the years. Malfunctions with the exit gates—and confusion caused traffic jams that trapped cars in the parking structures for hours.
