Police ID Man Killed at Bus Stop
Redondo Beach police have identified the man killed at the bus stop at Artesia Boulevard and Mackay Lane on Saturday morning.

Police have identified the man killed at a bus stop at Artesia Boulevard and Mackay Lane on Saturday morning as Richard Alkire and released more details on the collision that caused his death.
Alkire died after a car traveling westbound on Artesia Boulevard turned south on Mackay Lane and collided with a car going eastbound on Artesia Boulevard, according to the report in the 's Recent Law Enforcement Events release. One of the cars rode up onto the sidewalk, striking Alkire.

Police are unsure whether Alkire was sitting in his wheelchair or on the bus bench when the vehicle struck him. He suffered a broken left leg and head trauma injuries, and he died at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.

Alkire was well-known along the boulevard, according to Patch readers.
"His last words to me were, 'I have eyes in the back of my head,' as he wheeled himself backwards down the (boulevard)!" Janet Billings said in a comment on Patch. "(I'm) glad to have a memory that makes me smile."
