Rain Hindering Repairs of Redondo Beach Sinkhole

Authorities say the repair will take most of Thursday morning to complete.

REDONDO BEACH -- Crews on Thursday were continuing to repair a sinkhole that opened up in the middle of a residential street in Redondo Beach.

The sinkhole was reported Wednesday night on Ford Avenue and Dixon Street, according to the Redondo Beach Police Department.

A resident living on Ford Avenue told KNX newsradio that he heard the pavement buckled last night after a city truck drove by.

The sinkhole was reported to be about 6 feet wide and 5 feet deep, police said.

The cause of the sinkhole was a collapsed sewage pipe, city officials said. The pipes in that area are more than 40 years old, according to officials.

Rain in the area was hindering efforts by public works crews to make repairs, police said.

The repairs took most of the day to complete and the road was finally reopened around 4 p.m.
