RBUSD: Midyear Cuts About $250K
"Trigger cuts" implemented in Sacramento aren't nearly as drastic as they could have been, Redondo Beach Unified School District officials say.

The midyear "trigger cuts" that California Gov. Jerry Brown announced Tuesday mostly spared school districts across the state, despite the fact that the state was $2.2 billion short of the projections anticipated by the state budget passed in June. Instead of cutting nearly $2.5 billion from the overall budget, the trigger cuts amount to $981 million.
"It certainly is good news that the full trigger amount will not be pulled," Chief Business Officer Janet Redella told the Board of Education at Tuesday's meeting.
Instead of sweeping cuts across the board for K-12 education, schools will see a $248-million reduction to school-bus transportation funds.

Additionally, schools will see a reduction in per-student money they get from the state. Schools could have lost up to $1.5 billion in funding had all the cuts been implemented; instead, the cut is $327.6 million across the state.
"In total, that will probably mean a reduction of about $250,000 as opposed to maybe $2.3 million [for Redondo schools] … so it was a nice reduction," Redella said.

In his October "" address, RBUSD Superintendent Dr. Steven Keller said that if the most drastic trigger cuts were implemented, the district might have to implement furlough days for the first time in its history.
Nevertheless, it appeared that Tuesday's cuts will not force the district to implement furlough days.
