Redondo Beach Police: Catalytic Converter Thefts On The Rise

REDONDO BEACH, CA — Redondo Beach police are warning the public to watch out for catalytic converter thefts in the area and plan to host an event to prevent these recent thefts.

Similar catalytic converter thefts have also been reported in Laguna Beach and other parts of the Los Angeles and Orange County area, officials said.

Redondo Beach residents can attend the city's first "Catalytic Converter Theft Prevention Event" on Jan. 23 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Redondo Beach Police Department Annex, 200 North Pacific Coast Highway, Redondo Beach.

"This event is part of a multifaceted strategy that RBPD is employing to address the uptick in catalytic converter thefts that we have seen in the city of Redondo Beach," officials said in a news release.

People who participate will have their catalytic converters etched with a unique identifying number, officials said.

"This etching will act as a theft deterrent," officials said. "It will also provide law enforcement with valuable information should it be stolen and later located by law enforcement personnel during subsequent investigations."

Participation is limited to the first 80 people who register and it's free.

Police ask that if you sign up to attend, then bring your vehicle, a copy of your driver's license, and a copy of your vehicle's registration.
