Redondo Seniors Win Scholarships
Students from Redondo Union High School earn Sandpipers and Gates Millennium scholarships.
Three students received scholarships last week from Sandpipers, an all-volunteer organization dedicated to serving the needs of the South Bay through a variety of charitable and philanthropic programs.
Charlotte Kim, Angeline Lee and Joy Ohiomoba joined nine other Sandpipers scholarship recipients at a reception and dinner on May 15. Scholarships were also awarded to seniors from , , Leuzinger, Bishop Montgomery, Torrance, Gardena and Narbonne high schools.
The scholarship winners have an average weighted GPA of 4.26 and contributed an average of 33 hours of community service, according to Julie Stewart, director of publicity for Sandpipers.

Scholarships are based on a student's academic achievement, community and school involvement, leadership, and financial need, said Stewart.
Kim, Lee and Ohiomoba aren't the only Redondo Union seniors who received scholarships. Ohiomoba and seniors Ciara Diaz, Daniel Garzon and Sameer Siddiqui were among 1,000 people named Gates Millennium Scholars at the end of April.

The GMS program, which is funded via a $1.6 billion grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, awards "good-through-graduation scholarships which can be used to pursue degrees in any undergraduate major at the accredited college or university of the recipients’ choice," according to a news release from the program.
