Redondo Union Makes Newsweek List

ranks 413 in a list of America's Best High Schools compiled by Newsweek and The Daily Beast and released early this week.

According to The Daily Beast, the list weighed the following self-reported statistics from over 2,300 public high schools to come up with the top schools for the 2010-2011 school year:

• Four-year, on-time graduation rate: 25 percent
• Percent of 2011 graduates accepted to college: 25 percent
• AP/IB/AICE tests per student: 25 percent
• Average SAT and/or ACT score: 10 percent
• Average AP/IB/AICE exam score: 10 percent
• AP/IB/AICE courses offered per student: 5 percent

Redondo Union was listed as having a 94 percent graduation rate, with 99 percent of the 2011 graduates going on to college. The report also noted that the average SAT score was 1629, the average ACT score was 26.1, and the average AP score was listed as 3.5. Overall, the school scored a 0.53, according to the magazine's methodology.

Nevertheless, Redondo Union saw its rank drop a few slots over the past year. In last year's survey of the top 500 schools, the local high school was No. 405.

The highest ranking high school, according to the report, was The Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science in Kentucky, which boasted a 100 percent graduation rate and an average SAT score of 2010. The highest ranking California high school was Oxford Academy in Cypress, located about 24 miles south of Los Angeles in the Anaheim Union High School District. Oxford Academy also has a 100 percent graduation rate, with 100 percent of the 2011 graduating class going on to college.
