RUHS Debuts Healthier Eats, New Cafeteria

All food at the new Redondo Union High School cafeteria will be baked or grilled.

Students having lunch at Redondo Union High School's new cafeteria will now have a healthier range of meals to choose from following the cafeteria's opening and revamp last week.

In place of the typical fried foods found in high schools across the country, Redondo Union began serving only grilled or baked items to students in its newly remodeled student union. According to the school, the new cafeteria now meets the standards set by the Alliance for a Healthier Generation as well as the Blue Zones Project.

To mark the grand opening of the cafeteria, celebrity chef and nutrition expert Devin Alexander held cooking demonstrations for students and whipped up her lean beef, low fat "Little Dev" burgers.

In addition to serving as the school's cafeteria, the student union will also host school events, meetings and banquets, school officials said in a letter posted on the school's website. The open space will also serve as a quiet place for students to study.

Funding for the new cafeteria came from Measure C, a bond measure approved by Redondo Beach voters in 2008. Among other things, officials said Measure C aims to improve district classrooms and learning environments for local students.
