Updated: Storm Strikes Redondo Beach

Sunday's storm flooded back yards, flung branches off trees and knocked out power for more than 1,800 Redondo Beach residents.

About 1.4 inches of rain fell across the city Sunday, according to a weather report on CBS Los Angeles. A rainfall monitor on the city's website indicated that before the storm hit, Redondo Beach had seen nearly 5 inches of rain since January.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health issued a rain advisory for all Los Angeles County beaches—including Redondo and Torrance beaches—near storm drains, rivers and other areas of water discharge through 1 p.m. Wednesday due to the weather.

During a rain advisory, beachgoers are advised to steer clear of storm drains, creeks and rivers because bacteria, trash and other debris from city streets can enter the water in these spots.

"Fortunately, discharging storm drains, creeks, and rivers only comprises a small portion of the beach, and therefore anybody who wants to go to the beach will be able to enjoy their outing," said Public Health Director and Health Officer Jonathan E. Fielding in a statement. "We do advise swimmers and surfers to stay away from the storm drains, creeks and rivers as there is the possibility that bacteria or chemicals from debris and trash may contaminate the water near and around these areas, and some individuals may become ill."

Weather Underground reported a preliminary wind speed of 9 mph on Sunday. The temperature was in the 50s for most of the day.

The storm caused blackouts for more than 1,800 customers of Southern California Edison in Redondo Beach. Three of the power outages occurred in North Redondo Beach, and by late evening Sunday, about 600 SCE customers were still without power.

Thirty-two customers in South Redondo still did not have power by late evening Sunday.

The four outages that lasted into the night were caused by storm conditions, according to the utility's website. Power appeared to have been restored to all customers in Redondo Beach by 9 a.m.

The rain was welcome for many Southland residents.

In Los Angeles, the seasonal total dating from July 1 is 5.98 inches, about 45 percent of normal for this time of year, which is 13.29 inches, according to the National Weather Service.

Los Angeles typically gets about 15 inches of rain per year, most of it December-March.

Monday should be dry and mostly sunny in Redondo Beach, with highs in the lower 60s, according to the NWS.
