Top 10 Stories: Sharks, Snail Costume

Redondo Beach Patch is counting down its 10 biggest local stories from 2011. Today: a shark breaches (No. 8) and costume contest winners (No. 7).

It's been a crazy year. From fish die-offs to reality television episodes to freeway news (and everything in between), Redondo Beach Patch writers were always busy. Here are the Nos. 7 and 8 most popular stories of the year, chosen by popularity and editorial discretion.

Shark Startles Anglers (No. 8)

's fishing columns and stories have been a hit throughout the year, but one story about a shark jumping out of the water off the Palos Verdes Peninsula was by far the most popular.

According to John Ackley, captain of the Westerly, the 20-foot shark was swimming in the vicinity because of a large bait ball of anchovies when it launched itself more than 10 feet into the air.

North Redondo Mother-Daughter Pair Finalists in Costume Contest (No. 7)

and her daughter, Nell Turner, never dreamed that supermodel Heidi Klum would ever see one of their homemade costumes—yet their snail costume made from a foam shell and a crocheted hat with antennae was one of 10 finalists in the inaugural Little Pumpkin Challenge for most creative costume.

Though they didn't win the grand prize, the pair still had $1,031 donated to their favorite charity, Shane's Inspiration, which builds handicapped-accessible playgrounds in Southern California.
