48 American Airlines Flights Canceled Due to Loose Passenger Seats

At least one Bay Area flight on American Airlines was canceled Friday as 48 aircrafts were grounded for maintenance work after several loose seats were found on planes.

A Miami-bound flight from San Francisco International Airport at 6:40 a.m. Friday morning was canceled, SFO duty manager Doug Yakel said.

Forty-eight American Airlines Boeing 757 aircrafts were undergoing maintenance after some seats were dislodged this past week. As of noon Friday, repairs were completed on 42 of the airliners, with all planes expected to be back in service by Saturday.

Engineering teams were enhancing locking mechanisms on the seats to ensure they are secured to the floor.

In a company statement the airline said they have worked closely with the Federal Aviation Administration to ensure the safety of passengers.

"Some select flights may be delayed or canceled in order to complete this work," the statement read. "We apologize to our customers for any inconvenience this may cause with their travel plans."
