Coyote Warnings Issued In Redwood City Neighborhood

Young coyotes are on the move this time of year and residents are advised to watch out for the wild animals, especially while walking dogs.

REDWOOD CITY, CA — Coyote sightings have increased in Redwood City in recent days, particularly along nature trails, the city warned.

Young coyotes are moving through the area for their dispersal season, NBC Bay Area reported.

In response, city officials have posted signs along the Bay Trail in the Redwood Shores area, particularly near Genoa Drive, where most sightings have been reported.

Visitors are advised to use the trail with caution or avoid it altogether, especially for walking pets during dawn, dusk and nighttime hours.

Here's what you should do if you come across a coyote, the city says:

-Make yourself as large as possible. Stand up straight and wave your arms over your head.

-Make loud noises. Scream, yell or whistle.

-Be forceful and direct your voice at the coyote.

-Be animated.

-Throw rocks, sticks, anything you can pick up. Take steps toward the coyote. Be aggressive.

-Always look directly at the coyote. Never turn your back to it or run away.

-When walking, carry an item like a stick, golf club, water gun or air horn.
