SMC Funds New Rescue Vehicle For Remote Fire Brigade

The county will help cover the cost of a new, state-of-the-art ambulance for the Kings Mountain Volunteer Fire Brigade.

REDWOOD CITY, CA — The Board of Supervisors has voted to replace an aging rescue vehicle used to help respond to emergencies in a remote area of San Mateo County.

The board voted Tuesday to authorize a one-time $150,000 payment to the Kings Mountain Volunteer Fire Brigade to help cover the vehicle's $244,175 price tag. The fire brigade supports the Kings Mountain Fire Department and responds to emergency calls along the Skyline Boulevard corridor between Highway 92 and Skeggs Point.

County officials said the group's current vehicle is nearing 30 years old and will be replaced with a custom-built 2024 North Star ambulance manufactured by Braun Northwest.

"I am deeply grateful to the Kings Mountain Fire Brigade — our community heroes — who tirelessly protect not only their neighbors but also the thousands of visitors who travel along Skyline Voulevad on their way to the coast," said Ray Mueller, the District 3 supervisor. "Their bravery and dedication inspire us all, and I am honored to have the opportunity to ensure that they have the modern equipment they need to save lives when it matters most."

The county's portion of the cost comes from revenue generated by the Measure K sales tax, and the fire brigade will cover the remaining balance. The brigade's chief said the new ambulance's smaller size and updated design will also allow crews to access difficult-to-reach areas.
