REDWOOD CITY, CA — The San Mateo County Sheriff has launched a new community outreach initiative in the form of a therapy dog named Ben. The newest member of the sheriff's office will serve an important role on the Peninsula, tasked with comforting people in crisis and fostering positive interactions and strong bonds with the community.

He already played a starring role in a video shared Friday morning on Facebook .

"The therapy dog program has been one of my visions for many years," said Sheriff Christina Corpus. "Ben is a friendly face that will soon become part of the community. I invite you to join us at upcoming events to meet Ben in person, ask questions about our therapy dog program, and experience the benefits of an emotional canine firsthand."

The sheriff's office said Ben has a sweet demeanor and a knack for comforting humans, and the new program is designed to serve as a mental health resource for children and adults alike. Corpus hopes to expand the program in the near future to ensure that it can fulfill needs in San Mateo County's coastal and bayside communities.

Ben is already on the job and is scheduled to attend upcoming community events, give demonstrations and visit local schools. Anyone who spots him on the street is encouraged to come say hello.
