SMC Urges Residents To Get New COVID Boosters, Flu Shots As Fall Nears
Fall and winter mean more exposure to respiratory viruses, and local health leaders recommend neighbors consider getting their shots soon.

REDWOOD CITY, CA — San Mateo County's top health officials are recommending all residents seek out their flu shots and updated COVID-19 booster doses as fall and winter approach and people are exposed to more seasonal and respiratory illnesses.
"Fall and winter mark the traditional flu season, as more activities take place indoors and holiday travel is popular," the county wrote Wednesday. "COVID-19 is also more transmissible in confined spaces, so there is an increased risk for respiratory viruses during this period."
Earlier this week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention approved updated COVID-19 vaccines for everyone ages 6 months and older. According to NBC News, the reformulated Pfizer and Moderna shots are designed to target the XBB.1.5 omicron subvariant, which is linked to the vast majority of current COVID-19 infections.

Health officials recommend that people consider getting their flu and COVID shots at the same.
"If you are eligible, this is a good time to get both the influenza and updated COVID vaccines to help protect you from severe illness and hospitalization in the upcoming respiratory virus season," said Dr. Kismet Baldwin-Santana, San Mateo County's Health Officer.

County health officials note flu shots are formulated each year to target the strains expected to circulate most during the fall and winter, and the new COVID booster is similarly designed to be more effective during the upcoming season. Respiratory virus seasons typically see an uptick in RSV cases, which can present similar symptoms to COVID-19 and the flu.
Residents can reach out to their primary health care provider or pharmacy for flu and COVID-19 shots, which may be available at no cost for those with insurance. Many locations also offer free shots to those without health coverage. Neighbors who need help can give the county a call or send an e-mail.
