Supervisors Will Discuss How To Fill SMC Sheriff Vacancy
The board of supervisors are inviting the public to provide input into the process of replacing the sheriff after the recent removal.
SAN MATEO COUNTY, CA — The San Mateo County Board of Supervisors are holding a special meeting Tuesday evening to gather the public's input on filling the sheriff vacancy.
"This meeting is a vital opportunity for community members to participate in shaping the future of public safety in San Mateo County," said Board President David Canepa. "We want to ensure that the new Sheriff possesses the qualities and experiences that are most important to our residents."
The Board of Supervisors voted to remove Sheriff Christina Corpus on Oct. 14.

Supervisors will now seek input on the process and procedures for filling the sheriff vacancy. This includes desired qualifications, should the Board choose to make an appointment.
Residents are invited to a special meeting to discuss the desired qualities for the next sheriff. This feedback will help the Board decide between appointing a sheriff or holding a special election.

The County Charter mandates a Nov. 13 deadline to appoint a new sheriff or call a special election. An election could occur 102-131 days from the decision or align with the June 2, 2026 primary.
