Support Redwood City Public Library's Summer Learning Challenge
The Redwood City Library Foundation is helping to fund this program that prevent summer learning loss and boosts literacy.
Since 2015, Redwood City Public Library (RCPL) has offered a Summer Learning Challenge (SLC) for students in Redwood City and Redwood Shores with funding for books provided through San Mateo County’s Measure K. Books are given out in May as an incentive and students are encouraged to sign up, commit to reading a set number of books, and earn an additional free book when they complete the challenge. Throughout the program, the Library organizes events with authors, entertainers, and other exciting activities to motivate kids and remind them of the fun in reading.
Studies show that summer reading programs, such as the Summer Learning Challenge, can help curb summer learning loss—the decline in academic knowledge over the summer break. While learning loss varies for each student, the problem is more severe for children with special educational needs, including those with reading challenges, English language learners, and those from lower-income households. For students from disadvantaged backgrounds, summer learning loss can amount to the equivalent of up to three months of academic progress. Fortunately, summer reading programs can help curb this loss, maintaining or even improving literacy skills.
For summer 2025, RCPL’s Summer Learning Challenge is scheduled from June 1 to August 31. However, San Mateo County is no longer providing funding for the program. The Redwood City Library Foundation (RCLF) will be stepping up to help. The SLC distributes about 9,000 books annually, totaling $35,000. To keep this critical program running and help children avoid falling behind, the RCLF is relying on community donations.
