SONOMA COUNTY, CA β€” Detectives with the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office were still working to identify human remains found under suspicious circumstances over the weekend in Sebastopol.

A sheriff's deputy responded around 3 p.m. Saturday to the 300 block of Sparkes Road in unincorporated Sebastopol where a caller reported finding what they believed were human remains, sheriff's Spokesperson Rob Dillion said.

The caller directed the deputy to an overgrown area of the property where the remains were found. After the deputy confirmed the remains appeared to be human, Violent Crimes Investigations detectives were called out to continue the investigation.

Because nightfall was approaching, the Search and Rescue Team waited until the next morning to come out and search the area for evidence.

The death is considered suspicious by the sheriff's office.

"Due to the extensive decomposition of the remains, it is impossible to determine this person’s identity at this point; however, Violent Crimes Detectives are working with the Coroner’s Office to determine identification as quickly as possible," Dillion said Tuesday afternoon in a news release.

The investigation remained active Tuesday, with detectives working long hours and diligently pursuing all leads to solve the case, Dillion said.

The sheriff's office asked anyone with any information about the case to call 707-565-2185.
