Both the officer and the assault suspect were treated at a hospital following the incident, police say.

SANTA ROSA, CA β€” Santa Rosa police arrested a man for allegedly assaulting a police officer outside of a Safeway store late Tuesday night. Officers responded to a fight between two men around 11:25 p.m. Tuesday outside of the store at 2300 Mendocino Ave. One of the men reportedly assaulted a Safeway employee inside the store, police Sgt. Justin Farrington said.

An officer separated the two men outside the store. The man suspected of the assault in the store, identified as Timothy Ruhs, 27, a transient, tried to flee, Farrington said.

The officer chased and tackled Ruhs, who punched the officer in the face and broke his nose, Farrington said. Other officers arrived and Ruhs was handcuffed.
