Here are the top stories in San Diego today:
- San Diego will see an injection of capital to electrify ports and cut heavy duty truck emissions from a $4B plan to boost clean energy across the country. The goal is to break up areas that are “pockets of pollution,” according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), cutting emissions that have caused the pollution problems. By 2045, cutting emissions will save 2,900 lives and provide $29 billion in annual net benefits according to the EPA. (Times of San Diego)
- Senate Bill SB-10 has resulted in raised voices on both sides of the housing issue. The bill would allow cities to adopt ordinances to build up to 10 units of housing on a single lot in what is known as “transit-rich areas.” Those areas would become sustainable development areas that are located within one mile of public transit stops. Supporters say the bill will help solve the housing crisis. Critics worry about the lack of parking and high density in those areas. (CBS News 8)
- May is CalFresh Awareness Month, and families and individuals can register for CalFresh at a local event to increase their access to fresh, healthy food. It’s part of the county’s Live Well San Diego plan for healthy, safe, and thriving neighborhoods. Residents may apply to join the CalFresh program at events around the county. Check out the CalFresh, Live Well San Diego, County of San Diego calendar of events here. (Fox 5)
