Here are the top stories in San Diego today:

  1. According to San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan, legislation SB-14, now being considered, is definitely needed to help curtail human trafficking in our county. DA Stephen remarked that it is hard to understand why human trafficking which “abuses not just the body of human beings, but their minds, their souls, their spirits, their dignity, is not considered a serious felony in our state.” She also commented that so far we've really failed our victims." (Patch)
  2. On behalf of California Big City Mayors, Mayor Todd Gloria went before the Senate Judiciary Committee in support of Senate Bill 43 (SB-43). The updated law would allow cities to remove those with severe mental illness, or substance abuse, from the streets and into care. The plan is strongly supported by mayors struggling with the homelessness crisis. (Times of San Diego)
  3. A new Assembly Bill (AB-1472) affecting mobile home parks, would protect residents from becoming homeless. Since mobile home parks are low cost, residents are often low income, disabled, or elderly. AB-1472 would fine parks that forced residents to move out, then back in, every few months. (Voice of San Diego)
  4. San Diegans experiencing homelessness have an opportunity to live in the city’s fourth “safe parking” area in Rose Canyon. The community is part of the city’s Homeless Strategies and Solutions Department, operated by Jewish Family Service of San Diego. It will operate 24/7 and will offer residents a safe place to sleep until more permanent residences are found. Employment assistance, credit repair, and more will be offered to help residents reclaim independence. (Patch)
