Wildfire Prompts Evacuations, Threatens Homes In San Diego County

The blaze, called the Roadrunner Fire, sparked near Roadrunner Lane and Moonlit Trail in Boulevard, according to Cal Fire.

BOULEVARD, CA — A wildfire burned dozens of acres, forced evacuations and threatened homes amid scorching summer temperatures Friday in southeastern San Diego County.

The blaze, called the Roadrunner Fire, sparked shortly before 11:30 a.m. near Roadrunner Lane and Moonlit Trail in the community of Boulevard, according to Cal Fire.

Within an hour, authorities were evacuating nearby residents as ground crews and personnel aboard air tankers and water-dropping helicopters battled the blaze. As of 1:19 p.m. Friday, the fire had scorched 88 acres and was 5% contained, Cal Fire said.

Crews stopped the forward rate of spread shortly before 2 p.m., according to Cal Fire.

The San Diego County Sheriff's Office issued evacuation orders and warnings for nearby residents.

Evacuation orders were in effect for the following zones: SDC-2242 and SDC-2243. Evacuation warnings were in effect for the following zones: SDC-2177, SDC-2244 and SDC-2334. View an interactive map here.

"An evacuation order requires immediate movement out of the affected area due to an imminent threat to life," officials said. "An evacuation warning means there is a potential threat to life and/or property."

A temporary evacuation point was established at Golden Acorn Casino at 1800 Golden Acorn Way in Campo.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
