SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA — We've rounded up the stories you may have missed over the holiday weekend to prepare you for the week ahead.

But before we jump into Southern California's top stories, residents should expect October to kick off this week with some heat, according to the National Weather Service.

"It will be warmer each day today through Wednesday. Dangerously hot temperatures across many valley, mountain and inland areas on Tuesday and Wednesday," NWS Los Angeles forecasters wrote Monday. "A slow cool down will start Thursday and persist into the weekend. Max temperatures, however, will remain above normal away from the coast. Skies will be clear through the period except for patchy night through morning low clouds across the coasts."

In other news, an earthquake rattled the Inland Empire over the weekend. The quake, which had an epicenter near Fontana, had a preliminary magnitude of 3.2, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Weak shaking was reported across the San Gabriel Valley, and San Bernardino and Riverside counties.

Some parts of Riverside County were under a wildfire smoke advisory Monday due to the Line Fire in San Bernardino County. The blaze has burned more than 40,200 acres and was 83% contained, officials said.

A positive case of E. Coli was found at a water source in Riverside County, officials said. The sample was found before disinfection took place and was subsequently removed from the water system.

A security guard aboard a Metrolink train was stabbed in Los Angeles County, authorities said. Deputies detained a "person of interest."

Three members of the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department were seriously injured in a vehicle crash near the Texas-Louisiana border while on a support mission for those endangered by Hurricane Helene, authorities said.

Plus, a rabies-infected bat was found at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, public health officials announced over the weekend. The bat, which tested positive for rabies, later died at a rehabilitation facility.
