I-15 Lanes Close Due To Hazardous Materials Spill In San Diego: CHP

Drivers heading northbound on I-15 would experience significant slowing and lane closures for much of Wednesday morning, officials say.

SAN DIEGO, CA — A SIG Alert was ordered for a section of the northbound Interstate 15 Freeway in San Diego, and would last until Wednesday afternoon, California Highway Patrol advised.

Shortly after 8:15 a.m., a 911 caller reported something was "covering the #3 and #4 lanes of the northbound 15 Freeway and along the Friars Road offramp, according to CHP dispatch.

As of 9:30 a.m., Cal Trans and Hazardous Materials teams arrived to clean up the mess, which was initially described as a cement spill and was later identified as a "grease wastewater mixture classified as a hazardous material." The estimated cleanup time is approximately three hours, according to the CHP.

The spill stemmed from a crash between a blue Tesla and a commercial concrete truck on the northbound I-15 near the Friars Road offramp, according to CHP dispatch.

The closure affected drivers seeking alternate routes, increasing traffic on the 805 Freeway, as well as backing up travelers on the westbound 8 Freeway.
