Pedestrian Killed In North County Hit-And-Run Crash

The man was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

ESCONDIDO, CA — A pedestrian was killed Tuesday in a hit-and-run crash at a North County intersection, authorities said.

Miguel Leonides Garcia, 58, was crossing the street shortly after 6 a.m. at Broadway and Mission Avenue in Escondido when he was struck by a vehicle, according to the Escondido Police Department.

"He was struck by a vehicle turning right onto northbound Broadway," police said in a news release. "A witness account and subsequent investigation revealed the vehicle is a white off-road style SUV with a large spare tire and red high-lift style jack affixed to the back."

Garcia, an Escondido resident, was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The vehicle was last seen traveling north on Broadway and then east on Lincoln Avenue, police said.
