San Diego County Primary Election 2022: Real-Time Results

SAN DIEGO, CA — The polls are closed in San Diego County, and voters will soon know who won or whether there will be runoff races in November.

For the Board of Supervisors' District 4 seat and county sheriff, the top two vote-getters will face off on the Nov. 8 ballot.

Early results on Wednesday morning show Supervisor Nathan Fletcher in the lead with 61.95 percent of the vote and likely headed for a November runoff with second-place vote-getter Amy Reichert in the District 4 race, according to the Registrar of Voters website.

Fletcher, a Democrat, was leading the three-candidate race with 45,980 votes. Reichert, a Republican, was in second place with 29.02 percent or 21,540 votes. Sidiqa Hooker was in a distant third with 9.02 percent or 6,696 votes.

District 4 includes a large portion of the city of San Diego, as well as La Mesa, Lemon Grove and Spring Valley.

In the seven-candidate race for the next sheriff, Undersheriff Kelly Martinez was in the lead with 38.09 percent of the vote, according to the Registrar of Voters website.

Martinez, with 144,711 votes, was ahead of six other candidates vying to fill the role, following the February retirement of longtime Sheriff Bill Gore.

John Hemmerling was in second place, with 20.42 percent or 77,577 votes, followed by Dave Myers, with 17.85 percent or 67,810 votes. John "Gundo" Gunderson had 7.47 percent or 28,388 votes; Juan Carlos "Charlie" Mercado had 7.41 percent or 28,142 votes; Jonathan Peck had 6.35 percent or 24,119 votes; and Charles "Chuck" Battle had 2.43 percent or 9,217 votes.

As of April, the California Secretary of State reported that 26,948,297 Californians were registered to vote, which accounts for almost 82 percent of the state's eligible voting population.

Not surprisingly, there are far more registered Democrats than Republicans in the state, with 46.75 percent for the former and 23.92 percent for the latter. GOP registration in the state has been dropping steadily, a trend that shows no sign of slowing down even as Republican registration climbed at the national level over the last year.

In the 2020 election, 83.51 percent of registered voters in the county cast a ballot, an increase from the 2016 presidential election, when 81.46 percent of registered voters in San Diego cast a ballot. The increase was attributable to the pandemic-era adoption of universal vote-by-mail in California, according to the San Diego County Registrar of Voters.

In San Diego County, the rate of voter registration is high. As of April, it was 82.29 percent — with 41.24 percent of voters registered as Democrats, 27.12 percent as Republicans and 3.91 percent as American Independents.

Voter turnout is not expected to be as high this primary season, especially without highly competitive statewide races.
